Bernie Peterson's culinary skills developed out of necessity while he was living on his own in high school.

"I left home at age 16 1/2," he said, explaining that he rented a basement apartment on Monroe Street in Madison and commuted to Oregon High School. "I was just the kind of kid who wanted to be on my own. I didn't like a lot of supervision. A guy shouldn't say he didn't need his parents, but I had a plan."

His plan eventually included owning his own business, but first, he needed to experiment in the kitchen.
