WASHINGTON -- Production of methane gas from coal seams has become an important source of pipeline quality gas, and some day almost one-half of all gas wells drilled in the United States could the coalbed methane completions, an industry study suggests.
Estimates of coalbed methane resources have grown dramatically in the last few years to 14 percent, or 145 trillion cubic feet, of the nation's total natural gas resource base of 1,033 Tcf.
The bulk of the total U.S. natural gas resource base is comprised of conventional resources at 721 Tcf, or 70 percent; and proved reserves at 167 Tcf, or 16 percent.
