The Scripps Research Institute, the world-renowned bioscience research group in La Jolla, has three good reasons to replicate itself under the balmy air of the Sunshine State: Money, money, money.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush lured the Scripps Research Institute with a $550 million incentive package to open up a sister facility in Palm Beach County in the hope his state could duplicate San Diego's biotech phenomenon.

The San Diego region now ranks as the nation's third-largest biotechnology center, behind San Francisco and Boston.

Some 400 biotechs run by 24,000 scientists, managers, and support staff are located here.
