BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- One hundred and fifty miles offshore from the village of Wainwright on the north coast of Alaska, a small fleet of vessels is back on station for the third season of looking for oil in the remote Chukchi Sea.
Some 800 miles to the south in the Cook Inlet Basin, another exploratory venture is on the agenda not far from the discovery well that gave Alaska its first siginficant production more than three decades ago.
Wildcatters would prefer to be drilling on the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, but ANWR is a political issue in Washington and off limits to the drill bit. In the meantime, the search goes on ...
