Bakersfield is perhaps best known nationally as the home to the "Bakersfield Sound." In the 1950s, country stars such as Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Wynn Stewart looked at the overly polished and produced music coming from Nashville and added a rawer, rockabilly twist. This "honk tonk" music soon eclipsed the Nashville sound throughout the nation. However, the history of the city reaches far beyond America's post-war airwaves.
