MUTELY IN THE PAST two months, the stories began blending into the background like sickening wallpaper.
Each patch I clipped from the papers - some of them just tiny scraps - built a paper-clipped stack on my desk like so many pattern samples.
Shot dead in Des Moines was Monique Vance, mother of three. She had fled barefoot and was shot to death on her neighbor's porch. Her estranged husband has been accused of killing her.
In Lake Stevens, Clella Colson was found strangled. Her ex-boyfriend was found and charged after his 14-year-old son called police.
