NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 2003

On Dec. 4, 2003, Standard & Poor's Rating Services lowered its counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on American Physicians Assurance Corp. (APA) to 'BBB' from 'BBB+'. The ratings remain on CreditWatch with negative implications.

The ratings action reflects the currently diminished financial flexibility resulting from the unwinding of an Oct. 29, 2003, trust preferred pool transaction, reducing holding company cash to support APA's capitalization to $28.6 million from the $48.6 million that was previously available.
