Richard Schoenherr's new book, Goodbye Father, is yet another in the growing number of works addressing the present, parlous condition of the Roman Church.
In an earlier work, Schoenherr had documented this decline and projected both its acceleration and enlargement. In Goodbye Father, Schoenherr, a professional sociologist, augments the resources with which he responds to this crisis. This work is notable for the number of disciplines Schoenherr calls on to construct his argument. He explicitly refers to philosophers, anthropologists, historians of religion, psychologists and, occasionally, even theologians.
