Maghreb supports Chadli's clampdown
The political crisis in Algeria has upset plans to promote economic links between the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) states and focused attention throughout North Africa on the Islamist upsurge.
An extraordinary summit of UMA heads of state scheduled for 9 June in Benghazi and a meeting with four EC foreign ministers scheduled for the next day were cancelled because of the trouble (see Libya).
