In what might be construed as a backhanded compliment to Intel, its arch-nemesis, Sun Monday raised the white flag and in a deepening embrace of the x86 architecture that was, let's face it, positively inevitable acknowledged that it has cut a long-foreseen Opteron pact with AMD that will probably go down in the history books as the "Great Underdog Alliance."
Chip groupie Nathan Brookwood called the axis "huge" and a "big win for both companies." Sun will be the first major vendor to try to push the Opteron chip into the enterprise - IBM, which picked the CPU up in September, takes it for merely a HPC device for the e325.
