ST. PAUL, Minn. _ It's not even officially winter, but Paul and Jenny Birkeland have already used their new gas fireplace in their Minnesota home at least a dozen times.
"We never used the old one (a traditional wood fireplace). We didn't want to mess with the smell, smoke and ashes. It's time-consuming," said Jenny, who likes to turn on the fireplace in the morning while she drinks her coffee and warms up. She and her husband decided to insert a $2,300 gas fireplace into their wood fireplace.
"It's unbelievable. The convenience is great and it heats up the house really, really good."
