The troubling credibility questions around a Seattle Police Department drug arrest of a wheelchair-bound suspect demand an outside investigation. Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske should take the lead in pressing for a review by a more independent group than his Office of Professional Accountability.
Up to now, Kerlikowske has seemed both eager to slam the door and open to further review. In a provocative department statement issued under his name after OPA cleared two top officers, Greg Neubert and Mike Tietjen, of most concerns, he said, "The Seattle Police Department will not apologize for making arrests and seizing narcotics and illegal firearms."
