Those who like their British aristocrats to come stiff with airs and graces--and preferably red-faced and dressed in outmoded tweeds--will be disappointed by Jane, the Duchess of Northumberland. It is true that she possesses a tweed coat, but it is a singularly chic double-breasted number, worn with jeans, a gray turtleneck and suede boots. Her manner is equally polished and relaxed, and her desire to share her enthusiasm for the garden she has created is as irresistible as the gales that have just snapped a handful of her Scotch pines in two. As for her complexion, it is still, at forty-four, so much that of an English rose that a Metaphysical poet would probably argue ...
