Researchers with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reported earlier this year that trichinellosis numbers, caused by Trichinella spiralis, have continued to decfine in the U.S. and that pork production is no longer the leading cause of the disease
The report by Sharon L. Roy, Adriana S. Lopez and Peter M. Schantz of the Division of Parasitic Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, looked at data between 1997 and 2001 in the U.S. Trichinellosis became a nationally reportable disease in 1966, but statistics have been kept on the disease since 1947.
