This novel takes the form of 75 entries into a book written by Anne Hathaway Shakespeare, who is living at New Place, Stratford seven years after the death of her husband, William. Mrs. Shakespeare makes the following stipulation. "The day after all the immediate members of my family are dead and gone will be soon enough for a reader to be reading this book." This becomes all the more understandable as one realizes that the story is based on her experiences during a week-long visit to London when Shakespeare was 30 and introduced his wife to the famous "Second Best Bed."
