LONDON -- The momentum at Gucci Group keeps on building.

Sales at Gucci's directly operated U.S. stores reached an all-time high of nearly $4 million Thursday. "It was the best single day in Gucci America's history," a company spokesman told WWD. The surge was because of a vigorous U.S. market and particularly strong collections, he added.

The spike confirms Gucci's bullish outlook for the second half of its financial year, which runs from August until January. The Italian company said in a second-half forecast in October that it had not seen such growth since Sept. 11, 2001.
