LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT FROM the start: Landon Donovan is the best player in MLS. The San Jose Earthquakes forward is the most skilled and most dangerous attacker in the league, and its most precocious talent. But this year he wasn't the league's most valuable player.

Donovan's best play arguably came in the final weeks of the season, when he feasted on weak competition after the Quakes had already clinched the Western Division crown. He also missed seven matches for national team duty, and--although it would be silly to suggest that the Quakes don't need Donovan--the team had a more than respectable 4-1-2 record over that time.
