Holiday cacti are everywhere this time of year. They are grown from stem cuttings by the millions in greenhouses in Europe and America. The pots are wrapped in foil and tied with a bow, and the brightly colored, long-lasting flowers are a welcome sign of the season.
They are a long way from the mountainous ravines east of Rio de Janeiro, near the Tropic of Capricorn, where these plants live, perched up in trees and on rock faces, bathed in moisture and pollinated by exotic hummingbirds.
