LOS CABOS, Mexico - The chance to come face to face with Neptune's larger-than-life bounty has long been a specialty here, from landing record-breaking marlin to pods of whales spouting offshore.
When John Steinbeck sailed down the Baja Peninsula with a marine biologist friend in 1939, he recorded his wonder at the teeming marine life in "Log from the Sea of Cortez," published in 1941.
"The abundance of life here gives one an exuberance, a feeling of fullness and richness," Steinbeck wrote. He noted he had seen "playing porpoises," turtles and "great schools of fish."
