Saddam Hussein's lifelong dream of leading the Arab world back to its former glory came to an ignominious end in a pit where the bedraggled former dictator hid alone.
The arrest Saturday at a farm near Tikrit marked the culmination of a disastrous year for Saddam. Instead of building a modern-day empire to rival those of past Arab heroes, he lost control of Iraq, went underground _ literally and figuratively _ and saw his two sons and political heirs killed by U.S. forces.
