The European Commission decided on December 9 to authorise the British company Johnson & Johnson Medical Ltd to import and sell on the European market hermetically-sealed pumps containing chloroflurorocarbons (CFCs) designed to be implanted in the human body and dispense measured doses of drugs. This temporary exemption to Regulation 2037/2000, which bans the production, use and marketing of ozone depleting substances in accordance with the Montreal Protocol, is limited to December 31, 2004. It is based on Article 4 of the Regulation, which specifies scope for and conditions of exemptions for essential uses.
