Worldwide tenders have been invited by German Rail (DB) for one of the largest orders in its history. DB will purchase 203 diesel locomotives for freight traffic, with options for a further 320. DB expects to award the contract during the first quarter of 2004, with delivery in late 2005 or early 2006.
This huge order is the forerunner of a three-stage strategy to modernize DB's diesel locomotive fleet. It involves scrapping its oldest units, purchasing several hundred new locomotives of only three types, and fitting new engines to five types of existing locomotives.
