With a hotter-than-normal summer expected this year, safety officials and search-and- rescue types already have begun their active season.
And they are reminding people to wear lifejackets and remain observant and respectful of the open water.
Thirty-one people drowned in King County last year - a 10-year high and nearly double the 17 people who drowned in the county in 2005. A total of 27 King County residents drowned throughout the state in 2005.
More than half of the deaths occurred in the summer.
