As the days get colder and the nights are longer, we start to prepare for one of my family's favorite times of the season, the celebration of Hanukkah.
Truly a family holiday, this Jewish celebration is centered around lighting candles each night in a menorah, or "hanukiah," in observance of the miracles experienced by our ancestors more than 2,500 years ago in a fight for religious freedom. Menorah is the Hebrew word for "candelabrum."
This year the first night of Hanukkah is Friday, and the last night we light candles is Dec. 26, although the holiday actually lasts a full eight days, until sunset of the next day. ...
