The majority of practising chemists probably regard the f-block elements, lanthanides and actinides, as little more than a dense undergrowth of the Periodic Table remembered mostly, if at all, for their picturesque names of interest mostly to geographers and historians of science. Although they make up around one quarter of the Periodic Table, these elements were for many years all but ignored from a chemical standpoint, save for the obvious applications to the nuclear fuel cycle.
