Dec. 17--Using brightly colored mesh bags instead of plastic bags has boosted bulk apple sales for Stemilt Growers this year.
"We have more customers asking for it all the time," said Roger Pepperl, marketing director for the Wenatchee-based fruit growing, shipping and marketing company.
Stemilt officials plan to install four more apple-bagging machines by year's end to keep up with the demand for the new packaging. They already have six machines in operation.
The company sells about 25 percent of its total apples in bags, Pepperl said. ...
