The eels found in most coastal and inland waters around Europe and along the Mediterranean coasts of Africa and Asia almost seem ubiquitous. But data presented at a recent meeting held by the Copenhagen-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea show that eel stocks are dangerously close to collapse. In the last 20 years, European eel stocks have declined to just 1 percent of their former levels, and Asian eels to 10 percent. Researchers have yet to pinpoint a cause, in part because the eel's complex life cycle remains a mystery.
