An estimated 6.9% of adults and 8.7% of children in the United States have asthma, (1) and despite advances in pharmacologic therapy and
recently updated guidelines for diagnosis and management, the disease remains a significant public health problem. The number of office visits related to asthma rose nearly 55% in the period between 1980 and 1999, from 5.9 million to 10.8 million.
