Funds battle just beginning in Japan

New commodity funds trading regulations in Japan next year promise a bright future for the United States as billions of yen will likely flow into U.S. futures markets.

But, for the Japanese, the start of official fund trading means a battle among commodity futures companies for survival--among themselves and with the regulators.

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) drafted the outline of new commodity funds laws in March. A set of rules is expected to be enacted by the end of 1991.
