PEARL RIVER COUNTY -- According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), Mississippi has recorded its second death from the mosquito-carried disease West Nile virus (WNV). A Pearl River County resident has died after contracting the disease in October.
The most recent figures from the MSDH show a total of 72 human cases of WNV in Mississippi during the 2003 season--the revised figures include cases that required additional testing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Also to date. Mississippi has identified two human cases of St. Louis encephalitis, one human case of LaCrosse encephalitis and three Flavivirus infections this year.
