Ahmanson rumor revs N.Y. thrift's stock

Thunderous trading volume for a large New York thrift's shares last week was caused by investors who expect it to be acquired by Home Savings of America, an arbitrageur at a leading investment firm said last week.

JSB Financial Inc.'s stock gained 62.5 cents a share on July 29 to close at $17.125 on volume of 1.1 million shares, a more than tenfold leap on its usual daily pace. JSB's main subsidiary, Jamaica Savings Bank, had not released any news since reporting a week earlier its second-quarter earnings were up 59 percent from a year earlier.
