Red flags rising over Douglas' C-17 project
From everywhere on the gigantic aircraft, red flags sprout like desert flowers after a spring downpour.
They hang by the dozens, if not by the hundreds. From the engines. Inside the landing gear assembly. Out of circuit board assemblies. They all carry the same warning: "Remove before flight."
They signal workmanship flaws that must be repaired before the plane - Douglas Aircraft Co.'s over-budget and long-overdue C-17 military transport jet - can fly.
