At first, Marie Peluso chose to ignore the "pins and needles" sensation affecting her left hand. The 27-year-old woman was responsible for electronically laying out dozens of stories each week on a New York trade magazine where she worked as an editor. Occasional aches were part of the job. Sometimes she would slap her arm and make the irritation disappear. But the relief was only temporary, and before long, her right hand was also affected.
After a couple of months, the discomfort had turned into real pain. Finally, forced to visit a physician, Peluso learned the truth she had avoided: She was afflicted by carpal tunnel syndrome.
