On April 27, a single-hull 120,000-bbl. tank barge owned by Hicksville, N.Y.-based Bouchard Transportation Co. ran aground in Massachusetts and ruptured a cargo tank. Initial estimates indicated that a minimum 14,700 gals. (467 bbls.) of No. 6 fuel oil was spilled into Buzzards Bay, Mass.
However, Bouchard notified the U.S. Coast Guard on May 19 that the amount of oil that was released was actually around 98,000 gals. (approximately 3,100 bbls.). The Coast Guard now estimates that the spill was between 35,000 gals. and 55,000 gals.
