Dec. 23--SYDNEY, Australia--Maruha Corp., a major Japanese seafood company, has been charged in a New Zealand court for fishing offenses after its trawler allegedly under-declared its catch of hoki, the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries said Tuesday.
Government prosecutors filed the charge with the district court in Christchurch on New Zealand's south island on Monday. It carries a maximum penalty of a NZ$250,000 (US$160,400) fine and the forfeiture of both the trawler and its catch, the ministry's Christchurch district compliance manager John Slaughter told Kyodo News.
