Coming only days after the New Jersey department seized Mutual Benefit Life, the downgrading of six large life insurers by Moody's Investors Service caused the industry to hold its breath.

The announcements, made on a Friday, had many wondering what the following Monday would bring at the headquarters of the six companies. Would there be a reprise of Mutual Benefit - whose unraveling many feel started with a Standard & Poor's downgrade in May - with desperate policyholders besieging the home offices of some of the biggest names in the business?
