LA PAZ, Bolivia -- Violent protests involving thousands of people swept across Bolivia leaving at least 70 dead. The immediate cause of the unrest was the proposal to build a $5 billion pipeline through Bolivia to export natural gas to the U.S. and Mexico via a port in Chile. Protestors demanded President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada step down on the grounds that the pipeline project would give little to Bolivia, already Latin America's poorest country, with profits going mainly to foreigners. The president subsequently resigned.
