This past spring, Cordis Corporation hit the jackpot. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized Cordis to market its Cypher stent, a tiny, metal-mesh tube designed to keep a patient's coronary artery open. The breakthrough: unlike other stents, the Cordis model is coated with drugs that prevent scar-tissue buildup. One in four patients who use other stents needs another operation within months. Only one in 20 using the Cordis stent needs a second operation.
