NEW YORK (FNS) -- Mercantile Stores Co., Inc., posted a 6.8 percent increase in second-quarter profits on a sales gain of 5.1 percent.
For the quarter, which ended July 31, the company earned $18,128,000, or 49 cents a share, compared with $16,972,000 or 46 cents, a year ago. Year-ago results include a one-time tax credit of $1.7 million. Eliminating the tax credit, earnings would have increased 18.5 percent, Mercantile said.
