After fretting for two weeks over where to harvest ice blocks for the 2004 Ice Palace, St. Paul Winter Carnival officials have surrendered their fate to the deep and nearby waters of Lake Phalen.
For five hours Tuesday, Ice Palace volunteers gave up on Phalen's thin ice in favor of a proven quarry more than 200 miles away: Little Detroit Lake.
As Detroit Lakes Mayor Larry Buboltz prepared for his city to host the operation, Ice Palace co-chairman David Crary on Tuesday morning asked Winter Carnival staff members to start a news release to announce that Phalen wasn't freezing fast enough. The ice needs to be at ...
