Wisconsin beef farmers reacted with dismay as cattle futures prices dropped their limit Wednesday following a probable discovery of mad cow disease in a U.S. cow.
When the news of the preliminary finding of mad cow disease in a Washington state animal broke late Tuesday, it raised questions for cattleman Mark Riechers of Darlington about the prices his animals will fetch in the coming weeks and months. With beef prices at historic highs, Riechers paid high prices for the hundreds of cattle he's fattening for slaughter.
