Dec. 27--The high cost of hiring a lawyer might not be as certain as death or taxes, but it's pretty close.
For the many who can't afford billable hours, the Contra Costa Superior Court has launched two ventures designed to help those in legal quandaries help themselves.
Statewide, 200,000 people represented themselves in court last year, said Contra Costa Superior Court's Sherna Deamer. Locally, the court estimates that it will see more than 270,000 cases filed by people representing themselves by 2010.
