Thoroughly modernising Ankara
ANKARA municipality is grappling with problems all too familiar to urban planning departments. The rapid pace of urbanisation and a high birth rate mean the city's population is increasing by 120,000 a year. This is placing a severe strain on the capital's resources, infrastructure and services, as well as on the environment. Yet, in spite of the city's ills, Mayor Murat Karayalcin is confident about the capital's future. "Once we have completed our extensive programme of projects, Ankara will be transformed into a modern, contemporary city. Issues such as pollution will become a distant memory," he told MEED.
