ITU Telecom World 2003, the telecom industry's biggest trade show, convened last month in Geneva under a sharply different atmosphere from the last event in 1999. Indeed, given the turmoil of the industry since then, it was difficult not to make comparisons.

Held at the peak of the tech stock frenzy, ITU Telecom World 1999 saw telecoms players competing to outspend each other on booths, stunts and celebrities.
