SIR Alan Bates has died from cancer at the age of 69.

The stage, television and film actor died in a London hospital on Saturday night.

He made his name in the 1950s and 1960s with theatre performances in John Osborne's Look Back In Anger and Harold Pinter's The Caretaker.

In film, Sir Alan was perhaps best known for a nude wrestling scene with Oliver Reed in the 1969 film of D.H.

Lawrence's Women In Love.

He appeared in more than 50 other movies, including Zorba The Greek in 1964 and Far From The Madding Crowd in 1967.
