The Earlville Opera House is undergoing its first major renovation since it was rescued by local volunteers more than 30 years ago.
Work crews are punching holes in walls, rebuilding the lobby, installing an elevator and shoring up a brick wall, all to make the historic building accessible to the handicapped. A second phase will bring air conditioning and heat to the 111-year-old theater. That will allow the opera house to bring in musical acts year-round.
Opera house and village officials hope Earlville, population 800, will be rejuvenated, too.
