SAN JOSE, Calif. _ In the rush to ensure the safety of the U.S. meat supply, Bay Area labs may hold an important key _ a new generation of highly automated tests for mad cow disease that could help restore confidence in hamburgers and steaks. The tests are already used in Europe and Asia, and now, the federal government is weighing whether to use them here.
These tests give results in a matter of hours rather than days, making it possible to keep suspect meat off market shelves. This could have averted the hectic scramble by federal investigators as they search for meat from a diseased cow that was slaughtered and sent for processing ...
