Lena Herzog's collection of photographs seeks to present two Buddhist pilgrimages, one to and around Tibet's Mount Kailash ('the spiritual and physical centre of the universe'), the other to Bodhgaya in Bihar, India, to take part in the Kalachakra Initiation, during which a sand is constructed around a symbol of Mount Kailash. In the event, the Dalai Lama, who oversees the Bodhgaya proceedings, had to cancel the ritual, a revelation that sits as one of the few disappointments in Pilgrims.
