SOVIET UNION TO JOIN INTELSAT; WHAT ABOUT INTERSPUTNIK?

As reported first by SATELLITE NEWS more than 8 months ago (SN, Oct. 1, 1990, p. 3), the Soviet Union plans to become a member of Intelsat this summer, a further move to dismantle yet another part of the Cold War architecture that has existed between the United States and the Communist nation.

Moscow, sources said, will pay approximately $800,000 for a .5% interest in Intelsat. The Soviet Union will be the 121st country to join the international satellite organization.
