Dec. 31--WASHINGTON--The Bush administration announced sweeping new regulations Tuesday to bolster safeguards against mad cow disease, including banning the use of sick or injured cattle in the human food supply.
Just a week after the first case of mad cow disease in the United States was confirmed, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman unveiled what she described as "appropriate actions" to protect the public.
The administration had been mulling these actions since May, when Canada saw its first case of the disease.
